I was crappie fishing in Garrison Creek on the Oklahoma side of the state line and caught this "creature" and had no idea what I had caught. It was 25 inches long and weighted 4lbs 12 oz. I was able to verify what I caught from your website - thanks! I checked with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife and they don't even recognize the bowfin in Oklahoma so I guess I have the "unofficial" state record. LOL
The spot is just East of Hwy 64D and just South of I-40 in Oklahoma. I was probably only ľ mile from the Arkansas state line and about 1 mile from where the creek runs into the Arkansas River. I have lived in Oklahoma all my life and this is the first time I have ever heard of a bowfin.

This bowfin was taken at Forked Lake in Oklahoma. It's a small swamp oxbow in the southeast corner of Oklahoma. We collected it during an ichthyology trip to Oklahoma. We set out on an electrofisning boat at about 1:00 AM and shocked it up. It was the first bowfin any of us students had seen. It was the highlight of the trip. Can't wait to try and get one on a rod and reel.
